Next Generation Encrypted Database System (EncDB) is our latest collaborative project with Monash Univerity supported by Oceania Cyber Security Centre (OCSC) and Swinburne University of Technology.
The prototype of the Encrypted Database System stores data in an encrypted form and enables search queries over encrypted data. It is a system by design that ensures ultimate data ownership and protection.

Cloud computing and the IoT both serve to increase efficiency and convenience of supporting everyday business and personal activities. The IoT generates massive amounts of data, and cloud computing a pathway for that data to travel to its destination. However how to mitigate the risk of data breaches has always been a challenge for many. Since GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) rolled out globally, data breaches have caused organisations not only reputational accountability but also financial damage.
In Australia under current law, the data owners, the firm or organisation that is storing user data, are responsible for data breaches and will pay any fines or fees that are the result of legal action. Furthermore, the law continues to apply to the data owners who “outsourced” their compliance obligations by transferring data to the cloud and into the possession of a third-party cloud services provider. The data owners may still be liable for data breaches happened from the third-party cloud services provider side.
Many cloud services providers have made their best endeavour to improve their data protection policy and infrastructure which inevitably increases their operational costs. Depending on the service provider’s market position, the cost would be either absorbed by the provider or passed on to its users, either way, it is an uneconomical solution.
EncDB enables End-to-End Encryption which the cloud service provider will only store encrypted user’s data without a capacity to decrypt it and only the data owner has the capacity to decrypt the data. This will assure the data stored in the cloud service providers are safely guarded during a data breach.
EncDB enables Encryption Search which the end-users are able to query over encrypted data from cloud services. This ensures that cloud services providers only store client’s data and do not have the capacity to see what actually is stored while able to provide their services undisrupted. The end-users (owner of the data) can rest assured that their data is safely stored and would not be penalised if the data is breached from the cloud service providers.
EncDB provides a middleware which can be conveniently adopted in existing infrastructure which significantly reduces the cost and implementation effort for data protection.
